The most notable aspect of Fix 50 — formally named the Camellia City Viaduct project — wasn’t the work itself. It was doing the work, and finishing it ahead of schedule, without completely disrupting traffic across two counties.
“We do these kinds of projects statewide, but they usually are in rural areas,” said Dennis Keaton, spokesman for the state Department of Transportation. “It’s a deck rehab. Basically, there was cracking that had gone all the way through the deck. It wasn’t placing anyone in danger, but once it happens we have to get it replaced as soon as possible.”
